The Area
Arlanc is situated in the
heart of the Parc Naturel Régional
Livradois-Forez, nestling in a valley, the region is
protected on all sides by the Forez and Livradois
mountains, and the plateau of La Chaise-Dieu. Three rivers run
through it... The inhabitants may well have met one day to find names for their
rivers, and no doubt afraid that it would be difficult to remember names that
were too different, had a splendid idea and baptized them the Dore, Dorette and Dolore.
But then they left free rein to their imagination in the names they gave to the
streams which flow into them.
Seven of
the ten churches in the Pays d'Arlanc were built in the 12th century.
About two minutes walk down the road you will discover the Eglise
St Pierre dating from the 12th century. A few minutes further the Musée
de la Dentelle (Lace Museum) and the unique Jardin pour la Terre.
At the Musée de la Dentelle you can witness the art of
this ancient craft of lace making.
On the journey around the world in the Jardin pour la Terre
you will discover the various indigenous plants of every country in the world. Three different guides will take you on your
journey.
Day trips can be taken to Ambert to visit the Moulin
Richard de Bas, where paper is still made the same way as a few centuries ago,
or the Musée de la Fourme d'Ambert, dedicated to the making of this outstanding
quality cheese; the abbey of La Chaise-Dieu with its famous
classical music
festival in August; echo chamber and tapestries dating from the middle ages, Le Puy-en-Velay with its remarkable volcanic rock
foundations, each with either a church or statue on top, or Vichy
famous for its spas, St. Nectaire with its church and also famous for its
cheese of the same name, or Thiers where the highest quality cutlery has
been made for the last 5 centuries, or Cheyrac to visit Le Jardin des
Nielles where essential oils are manufactured.
DOLORE - The
Dore and the Dolore cross through Arlanc before coming together downriver.
"Ar-len" means 'between two rivers' in pre-Gallic.
PAPER - The buttons
at the bottom and background images are detail from the hand-made paper manufactured and sold
at the Moulin Richard de Bas.
